Markings: The receiver is marked "221139", the top of the chamber ring has had a Russian crest removed. The barrel shank is marked with the Finnish "SA" property marking and the Sako marking with, "221139 / 1942". The floor plate is marked "11397" (over-stamped). The bolt knob is marked "1139", the left of the bolt root has "272" struck-out. The right side of the stock has the Sako cartouche. There are small proofs throughout. THe barrel has an import mark on the right between the nosecap and front sight.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade with protective wings fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a sliding escalator assembly marked out to 10.
Stock Configuration & Condition: This rifle has a two piece glossy wood stock, hinged nose cap with cleaning rod cutout (rod present) and bayonet lug, barrel band with two sling loops, through bolt, straight wrist, straight comb, sling loop in the belly, sling well on the left, and a steel buttplate. The stock has the signature finger jointed forend. There is handling and storage wear. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There are several chips in the stock. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 13.5" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is dark and the rifling is defined. There is heavy erosion in the bore. There is moderate pitting in the grooves. In this writer's opinion, this bore rates 4 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 35% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and nicks throughout. There is thinning throughout. The blue finish has turned to a light patina throughout. There is surface corrosion on the magazine. There is surface rust forming on the bolt knob. The markings are clear, the screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant represents the culmination of Finland's efforts to improve upon the earlier Russian Mosin rifle design. Developed during the late 1930s and early years of the Second World War, the M39 incorporated a heavier barrel, improved sights, and redesigned stock to enhance accuracy and handling. Many of these rifles were built using earlier Russian receivers that had been captured or inherited after Finland's independence from Russia. Produced by firms such as Sako, these rifles were chambered in 7.62x54R, the long serving Russian cartridge adopted in 1891 that continued to see widespread military use throughout the twentieth century.
This example was produced by Sako in 1942 and bears the Finnish "SA" property mark on the barrel shank along with the Sako marking and serial number. The rifle retains about 35 percent of its metal finish with thinning blue, scattered scratches, and areas of patina along with surface corrosion visible on the magazine and light rust forming on the bolt knob. The two piece hardwood stock with the characteristic Finnish finger jointed forend shows handling wear including scratches, compression marks, and several small chips but remains structurally sound overall. The bore appears dark with defined rifling along with heavy erosion and moderate pitting present, rating 4 out of 10 in this writer's opinion. The action functions correctly and the rifle presents as a wartime Sako produced M39 reflecting Finland's refinement of the Mosin Nagant design during the Second World War.
