Sights/Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch dovetailed into the barrel. There is a ding in the rear sight.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is two piece wood with a straight comb, straight wrist grip,12-rib forend, and a smooth metal buttplate. The buttplate has patina and surface oxidation. The furniture shows scattered pressure dings and surface scratches. The LOP measures 12.75" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no chips or cracks. The furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued, case colored

Bore Condition: The bore is grey and the rifling is worn. There spots of heavy pitting throughout the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 4/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of it's original finish. The metal shows faint scrub marks on the receiver, edge wear, minor scratches, and occasional freckling. The screw heads are unmarred and retain turnable slots. Several of the markings have been hand cut and are not original. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair condition as an antique (see mechanics section).

Mechanics: The action DOES NOT function correctly. The action bar lock is worn out and can fire out of battery. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Winchester Second Model 1890 was manufactured in 1897 and qualifies as an Antique firearm. Produced by Winchester, the Model 1890 was John Browning's highly successful slide-action rimfire design and quickly became a staple in galleries and small game fields across America. The Second Model variation reflects refinements made during the early production years of this long-running design.

Chambered in .22 Short with a 24.375 inch barrel, this rifle retains the classic gallery configuration that made the Model 1890 so popular in the late 19th century. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 4 out of 10, showing significant wear consistent with age and extended use. The rifle retains approximately 85% of its original metal finish.

Mechanically, the action does not function correctly. The action bar lock is worn out and the rifle can fire out of battery, creating a significant safety concern. The refinished furniture rates in Very Good condition with solid structure and typical handling wear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair condition as an antique and should be looked over by a gunsmith due to the mechanical issues.
