Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a u-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the barrel.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece walnut with 17-groove flat bottom pump grip, straight wrist, straight comb, and Winchester checkered hard rubber buttplate. There is a crack on both sides of the buttstock at the toe. There is modest handling wear. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the rear of the buttplate. Overall, the stocks rate in Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The action shows modest operation wear on the magazine tube and action bar. There is thinning on the leading edges and muzzle. There are areas of thinning that have introduced mottled patina. There is light scattered oxidation. There tangs have finish loss from handling. The screw heads are sharp to tool marked. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements. There is a takedown screw on the left side of the frame.

Our Assessment: Produced in 1958, this Winchester Model 62A is a true “Gallery Gun,” chambered exclusively for .22 Short and featuring the distinctive gallery style loading port cut into the magazine tube. These pump-action rimfires were popular in American shooting galleries well into the 20th century and remain desirable collector items today, especially in this configuration. This example has the correct 17-groove flat-bottom forend and retains approximately 90% of its original blued finish, showing expected thinning at the high points and action bar, light mottled patina in areas, and scattered oxidation from honest use. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling and rates a 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stocks show typical handling wear, with a pair of cracks at the toe of the buttstock, but still offer vintage character and remain structurally serviceable. Mechanically sound and with clear markings throughout, this takedown rimfire would make a fantastic shooter, display piece, or restoration candidate. For fans of classic Winchester design and American shooting history, a true .22 Short gallery gun is getting harder to find.
