Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a “U”-notch elevator sight dovetailed into the barrel. The top tang is drilled, tapped and filled for a tang sight (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with a grooved slide-handle, straight grip, straight comb and checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate. The left of the buttstock has a prominent circled " "5" / SPOT" marking, the circle and SPOT are filled with white paint while "5" is filled with red. The stocks have no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/4" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has minor wear with well defined checkering. Overall, the stocks are in Excellent condition as restored.

Finish Originality: Professionally Restored

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright, the rifling is sharp. There is infrequent faint erosion and a little stubborn fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its current metal finish. The balance of the finish shows only minor operational wear. There is some operational wear under the finish on the breech-face and in the locking lug slots. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition as restored.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 62 is a classic American pump-action .22 rifle, introduced in the 1930s as an updated version of the earlier Model 1906. This example, made in 1935, is chambered in .22 Short and features the highly desirable triangle-cut loading port, identifying it as a Gallery Gun, a scarce configuration once commonly used at shooting galleries and fairs.

These gallery models were optimized for low-recoil, indoor target shooting with .22 Short ammunition and saw heavy use in public spaces, making high-condition examples especially scarce and collectible. It also makes them well worth restoring, and this example has been quite expertly returned to outstanding condition. Factory records for this serial range are not available, but it is entirely possible that the "5" Spot marking on the stock is even original and the gun originally shipped for the 5-Spot Short Range Gun Clubs of America in Toledo, Ohio. These rifles were used in a regional shooting game in which competitors attempted to eliminate a small "5" marked on the target with as few shots as possible, technically it could be removed entirely with as few as three rounds.

Collectors of Winchester .22s, rimfire enthusiasts, and pump-action fans will all find this beautifully restored Model 62 a worthy addition to any collection.
