Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable elevation u-notch dovetailed into the barrel. A Marbles aperture sight is mounted to the tang.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is two piece wood with a straight comb, checkered semi-pistol grip, checkered forend, and a smooth metal buttplate. The buttplate has cold blue applied and shows some edge wear. The furniture shows scattered pressure dings, a few gouges, and other blemishes. Many of the blemishes have been sanded and finished over. The LOP measures 13.25" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There is a repaired chip in the heel of the stock. There are no cracks. The furniture rates in Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Nonoriginal, spots have been gone over with cold blue

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is light erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its nonoriginal metal finish. The finish shows edge wear, a few light scratches, and faint pitting on the receiver. The screw heads show light tooling and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1903 was manufactured in 1910 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic rifle. Produced by Winchester, the Model 1903 was Winchester's first commercially successful semi-automatic rimfire rifle. It was uniquely chambered for the proprietary .22 Winchester Automatic cartridge, designed specifically for use in this blowback-operated platform and not interchangeable with .22 Long Rifle.

Chambered in .22 Winchester Automatic with a 20 inch barrel, this tube-fed semi-automatic rifle represents an early and important step in American self-loading rifle development. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8 out of 10, with solid internal condition. The action functions correctly.

This rifle retains approximately 70% of its nonoriginal metal finish, presenting a clean and cohesive appearance consistent with refinishing. The refinished furniture rates in Good condition with visible handling wear. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition and stands as a representative example of a 1910 Winchester Model 1903 with a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum.
