Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable elevation u-notch dovetailed into the barrel. The elevation adjustment piece is missing.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is one piece wood with a straight comb, semi-pistol grip, smooth forend, and a checkered metal buttplate. The buttplate has moderate handling wear. The furniture shows pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. The LOP measures 13.25" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There is a chip taken just in front of the magazine loading hole in the stock. The furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp with faint fouling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its original metal finish. The finish shows rub marks through the finish on the barrel, edge wear, and light scratches. The screw heads show light tooling and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This prewar Winchester Model 74 was manufactured in 1941 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic rifle. Produced by Winchester, the Model 74 was introduced in 1939 as Winchester's replacement for the earlier Model 1903 and Model 63 series rifles. Designed as a simple and reliable semi-automatic sporting rifle, the Model 74 became a popular choice among small game hunters and recreational shooters. Examples manufactured in 1941 represent the final full year of prewar production before civilian firearms manufacturing shifted toward wartime priorities.
