Markings: The top flat of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED JUNE 26.88. DEC. 6.92.” The left side of the barrel is marked “22 W.R.F.” The bottom tang is marked with the serial number “321185.” The upper tang is marked “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK.” The barrel is also marked “MOD. 1890.”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a buckhorn-style notch sight dovetailed into the barrel.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The rifle has a two-piece walnut stock set, consisting of a ribbed, slide-action forend and a straight grip buttstock with a crescent steel buttplate. The wood shows handling wear, scratches, and finish loss, consistent with age. There are no visible cracks or structural defects. The length of pull (LOP) measures approximately 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Good-Very Good overall condition.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: This rifle has a fixed tubular magazine with a capacity of approximately 10 rounds.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray, the rifling is defined. There is moderate visible erosion in the bore. There are two squib marks in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 6/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 30% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows thinning, patina, and scattered oxidation. There are spots of light surface rust and pitting present. The receiver has a mottled gray patina. The screw heads are lightly tooled but remain serviceable. The markings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 is an iconic early slide-action rifle that was highly favored for small game hunting and target shooting. Designed by John Moses Browning, it quickly became one of the most successful .22-caliber pump-action rifles of its time.

This particular example, manufactured in 1907, has been rechambered for .22 Magnum. While originally chambered in .22 WRF, conversions like this are sometimes performed to allow use of modern, higher-velocity .22 Magnum ammunition. Given the higher pressures of .22 WMR compared to .22 WRF, it is recommended that the buyer ensures safe operation before use.
