Markings: The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED JUNE 26.88. DEC.6.92." followed by "-MOD. 1890-". The top flat of the barrel near the receiver is marked "22 SHORT". The bottom of the receiver and lower tang are marked with the serial number "252543".

Barrel Length: 24” Octagonal

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade flip up globe screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch leaf screwed to the barrel.  The top tang is mounted with a folding aperture sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The rifle has a two-piece wood stock, consisting of a straight grip, straight comb, and crescent metal buttplate walnut buttstock and a grooved walnut pump handle. The stock handling wear. The buttplate is metal and has some patina and wear. The pump handle is in good shape with some handling wear. There is a small crack at the bottom tang. The LOP measures approximately 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is dark, the rifling is defined. There is heavy visible erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 6/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 40% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling wear, patina, and thinning throughout. There are scattered nicks, dings, and some minor areas of oxidation. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 is one of the most recognizable pump-action .22 rifles in history. Designed by John Moses Browning and introduced in the late 19th century, it quickly became a favorite among target shooters and small-game hunters. This particular example, chambered in .22 Short, was manufactured around 1905, making it C&R eligible.
