"No terms except an unconditional surrender can be accepted. I propose to move immediately upon your works"; that was General Grant's famously laconic response to General Buckner's request for terms of surrender after the Union victory at Fort Donelson in 1862. It earned Grant a new nickname, instead of his given first and middle name of Ulysses Simpson, he was thereafter called Unconditional Surrender Grant. The "works" he was referring to was the line of Confederate defensive fortifications, which usually included various types of anti-infantry and anti-cavalry obstacles, including rows of X shaped wooden pikes known as "chevaux de frise".
