When General Grant had finally cornered Lee and his army at Appomattox in Virginia in April 1865, Grant called for the surrender of the Confederacy in a gentlemanly letter, and a defiant Lee wrote back, among other things, “To be frank, I do not think the emergency has arisen to call for the surrender of this army.” Grant took the comment in stride, and again called for the South to lay down their arms and avoid any further bloodshed in another letter to Lee, who this time seemed to grasp the hopelessness of continued warfare, and the surrender was signed on April 9, 1865.
