General Ulysses Simpson Grant’s calm under fire was one of his most notable traits, impressing even the most seasoned campaigners among his staff. In the midst of furious see-saw battles with runners approaching with terrible news of the line crumbling or his flank being turned, Grant would calmly listen, chomp his cigar, and sift through the hectic reports like an experienced miner panning for gold, and give his orders without the slightest change in his voice. Then, he would sit back down at the base of a tree, and continue whittling sticks with a pocket knife, waiting for the next reports from the line to arrive. This Vintage Matted US Civil War Photo of General Grant & Staff at his Headquarters in City Point, Virginia in ca. 1864 is in Good condition, with some even overall age wear. It’s a 9” x 6” matted picture without a frame, and shows an imbedded fingerprint at the lower right front corner from the original development process.
