Arvo Ojala came to Hollywood in the early 1950s, determined to improve the gun handling he saw in Western TV shows and movies, which he deemed inadequate. Indeed, Ojala taught most of the major Western movie stars the basics of the fast draw technique, and his namesake leather pistol holsters were considered the gold standard in Hollywood for decades. This Vintage 1970s Arvo Ojala Hollywood Custom Paladin "Have Gun Will Travel" Colt 7.5" SAA Holster Double Rig is in Very Good Condition, with some scattered drying, wrinkling, and crazing to the belt, some scattered scuffing and scratching to the holsters, and with some scattered age wear evident. Most interestingly, this rig was made by Ojala for a private collector and inspired by the CBS 1957-1963 television series “Have Gun will Travel” starring Richard Boone. The left and right hand holsters are an exact mirror matching set, crafted in the classic “fast draw” design with a steel internal lining to keep them incredibly rigid, allowing the guns to be cocked while still clearing leather (the key to Ojala’s fast draw technique). Both holsters are embellished with Paladin’s iconic “knight” chess piece metal emblem at front, each with a red rhinestone eye. They feature folded over and bottom laced skirts that also act as the belt slides, bear black rawhide leather hammer loops at each inner top edge, and are stamped at each back with the oval logo of their maker, the famous “ARVO OJALA / PAT. NO. / 2832519 / HOLLYWOOD, CAL.”. The holsters are constructed of tough black leather with purpose made open toes, boast knotted black rawhide leather tie down laces at the lower backs, and measure 2 1/2” wide across the top openings, and 9“ long down the straight sides, making them ideal for Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army revolvers with 7.5” barrels. The belt is also constructed of tough black leather, sports 21 sewn leather shell loops for .44 WCF/.45 LC ammo along the back, and is stamped at the interior right side with its matching maker, the legendary “ARVO OJALA / MAKER / HOLLYWOOD, CAL.”. It measures about 43” long overall x 3” wide, bears a fully functional metal front buckle closure, and is one of the few Ojala “Paladin” double rigs known. It comes from the collection of noted gun writer Rick Hacker, author of the 2014 Gun Digest award winning article “The Holsters of Arvo Ojala.”, and includes a copy of Paladin’s Have Gun Will Travel business card.
