Arvo Ojala came to Hollywood in the early 1950s, determined to improve the gun handling he saw in Western TV shows and movies, which he deemed inadequate. Indeed, Ojala taught most of the major Western movie stars the basics of the fast draw technique, and his namesake leather pistol holsters were considered the gold standard in Hollywood for decades. This Vintage 1950s Arvo Ojala Hollywood Stembridge Gun Rentals Movie Prop Colt 5.5" SAA Revolver Holster is in Good Condition, with two pinholes in the middle front “single loop”, some scattered denting to the nickel brass studs around that front “single loop”, missing some stitching at front and back, missing one stud from the lower left front “single loop”, and with moderate overall flattening, stiffening, drying, surface cracking, and age wear evident. Most interestingly, it’s crafted of tough black leather in the classic “Mexican single loop” design, with a folded over and riveted skirt that also acts as the belt slide, features a purpose made open toe, and is stamped at the upper back body with “STEMBRIDGE / GUN RENTALS”, along with the inventory number, “137”. Stembridge Gun Rentals was one of the preeminent weapons suppliers to the Hollywood movie studios, and even owned a significant number of Colt SAAs that they would rent out, all of course marked with the letter “S” for Stembridge. Actor James Arness’ Colt SAA in “Gunsmoke” was supplied by Stembridge, and any of their firearms or holsters remain highly sought after today due to their direct connection with the golden age of Westerns. It’s marked at the middle back with the equally famous name of its maker, “ARVO OJALA / MAKER / HOLLYWOOD / PAT. PEND.”, boasts a knotted rawhide leather lace at the lower back, and measures 4” wide across the top opening, and 7 3/4” long down the straight side, making it ideal for a Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army revolver with a 5.5” barrel.
