The old adage goes, “To he who has more, more is given, to he who has less more is taken away.” By the late 19th century, Winchester Repeating Arms was a behemoth of a firearms company, and the sheer number of different cartridges available for their lever action repeaters and single shot rifles, from the powerful .45-70 US Government, to the iconic .44-40 WCF, to the humble .22 rimfire, presented them with a tremendous marketing opportunity. Winchester “bullet boards” displayed the incredible breadth of Winchester’s cartridge lineup, and signaled to customers and competitors alike that whether for hunting, sporting, war, or target shooting, there was hardly a cartridge extant that was outside of Winchester’s realm. This Vintage 1968 Winchester Repeating Arms Reproduction “Double W” Model 1902 Style Lithographed Framed Cartridge Display Poster “Bullet Board” is in Very Good condition, with a large crease in the lower left front corner, some light scratching and whitish soiling at the middle and lower left front, moderate scattered tearing, “browning”, and soiling to the brown paper backing of the frame, and with some scattered age wear evident. Most interestingly, this piece is a scarce 1968 Winchester authorized reproduction of their iconic Model 1902 “Double W” lithographed “bullet board”, denoted by the marking “W-REPROS” (operated by a fellow named Bill West) in off-white at the top left front corner, and the marking “BY PERMISSION OF OLIN” (the parent company of Winchester) in off-white at the bottom left front corner. This one is unique in that the original print and wood frame (with a protective plexiglass front cover), measuring 49” x 33”, have been beautifully built into an even larger wood frame, measuring 57 ½” x 41 ½” x 2 ¾”, and the rig is marked “PRESENTED WITH COMPLIMENTS / OF THE / Winchester Repeating Arms Co. / PLEASE HANG IN A PLACE OF PROMINENCE” on the middle of the brown paper backing, above the stenciled alphanumeric series “No. 416”. Those markings suggest this poster was given by Winchster themselves to one of their larger dealers to display prominently in their gun shop. The poster itself features an elegant green background with the iconic “Double W” design at front, presenting a stunning array of Winchester cartridges, from classic black powder rounds to cutting-edge smokeless cartridges, and still even having tins of percussion caps decorating the points of the "W"s. The top of the board reads “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.” in large red lettering, the middle reads “REPEATING RIFLES AMMUNITION / H / TRADE MARK” in red, the lower middle reads “WINCHESTER REPEATING RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS AND SINGLE SHOT RIFLES”, GUN WADS OF EVERY DESCRIPTION PERCUSSION CAPS”, and “METALLIC AMMUNITION PAPER AND BRASS SHELLS PRIMER & C.” in off-white, the still further lower middle reads “NEW HAVEN, / CONN. U.S.A.” in red, the bottom reads “NEW YORK” and “SAN FRANCISCO” in off-white, and all of the cartridges and other accouterments are identified in off-white. It also features a forest hunting scene in an oval at the middle, and insets of a mallard duck and bull moose at each side of the middle. This is a huge display, and could easily be the crown jewel of artwork in any gun room.
