The old adage goes, “To he who has more, more is given, to he who has less more is taken away.” By the late 19th century, Winchester Repeating Arms was a behemoth of a firearms company, and the sheer number of different cartridges available for their lever action repeaters and single shot rifles, from the powerful .45-70 US Government, to the iconic .44-40 WCF, to the humble .22 rimfire, presented them with a tremendous marketing opportunity. Winchester “bullet boards” displayed the incredible breadth of Winchester’s cartridge lineup, and signaled to customers and competitors alike that whether for hunting, sporting, war, or target shooting, there was hardly a cartridge extant that was outside of Winchester’s realm. This Custom Reproduction Winchester Repeating Arms Model 1884 Style Cartridge Display “Bullet Board” is in Very Good condition, missing the 44-105 cartridge, the BB cap, the BB cap conical, the 56-46 cartridge, the 56-50 cartridge, and 3 of the paper shot shells, most of which resulted in small holes where they were once attached, missing the bullet from the 41 CF casing, the 32 Extra Long casing, and the 32 Smith & Wesson Rifle casing, and with the 22 blank remaining sideways incorrectly instead of vertical, some light surface nicking removing a bit of the painted finish at the lower left front, some scattered patina to some of the cartridges, some minor cracking and splintering to the back of the wooden frame from the copper securing wire coming through the wood, and with some scattered wear evident. Please disregard the yellow inventory tag attached to the hanging wire in the photo of the back. Most interestingly, this impressive custom reproduction of the Winchester Model 1884 bullet board features original casings, bullets, and primers (none have powder). This type of Winchester bullet board was the first of what would later become the “classic” model by using a lithographed design with the bullet information printed brightly and the Winchester shells mounted directly to the board. A great amount of time and effort was put into this piece, and it shows a high level of craftsmanship. There are three images of hunting and wilderness scenes in the center of the display; these are paper cutouts that have been glued to the board. The colors of the lettering, trim, and designs throughout are bright and bold, and contrast well with the blue background. The wooden frame measures 43 3/8” x 31 3/4” x 3”, and the cartridge board itself measures 38” x 26 1/4”. The cartridges are in an inverted “V” shape with cartridges in an arc on each side, a circle of cartridges in the middle, and shotgun shells, bullets, and 6 tins of primers at the bottom. The top of the board reads “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.” in large gold lettering, the middle reads “GOVERNMENT CONTRACTORS / H / TRADE MARK” in white and red, the bottom reads “NEW HAVEN, / CONN. U.S.A.” in white, one side reads “METALLIC AMMUNITION PAPER AND BRASS SHELLS FELT GUN WADS, PRIMERS & C.” in white, the other side reads “WINCHESTER Repeating AND SINGLE SHOT RIFLES.”, and all of the cartridges and other accouterments are identified in white. The cartridge board is wood with a painted front, and the cartridges are tied in place with copper wire with the ends extending through the back, some of which are covered with tape.
