Winchester has always had clever advertising campaigns and marketing initiatives, and one such program was their “W” time payment plan of the 1950s and 1960s. With a down payment of as little as 10%, the buyer could walk away with the Winchester of their choice that day, and they had 20 months to pay the balance. With a program like that, it’s no small wonder that Winchester was one of the more beloved firearms makers of their day. This Vintage 1950s Winchester “W” Time Payment Plan Firearms Layaway Program Die-Cut Cardboard Advertising Poster is in Poor condition, remaining in 4 pieces, though that makes this piece ripe for a professional restoration, as all of the pieces are included and could easily be taped or pasted back together with some skill and patience. The top left corner has torn away, and the bottom sections are in two pieces and separated from the main body. There is some scattered scuffing at the upper left front, some scuffing to the top left corner piece that remains separated, some scattered wrinkling to the ends of one of the bottom sections, some scattered scuffing to both bottom sections, some scattered “browning” and edge scuffing at back, and with heavy overall age wear evident. Most interestingly, it’s a fairly large, die-cut cardboard advertising poster in a unique shape, features a yellow, red, black, and white design, and bears “This / WINCHESTER / ONLY _ DOWN under the” at the upper right front, “WINCHESTER / FIREARMS” at the upper left front, along with a large “W” behind “TIME / PAYMENT / PLAN”, and “WINCHESTER / World Famous Firearms” flanked by large “Ws” at each side of one of the bottom sections. It’s also marked “WINCHESTER-WESTERN, OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION, NEW HAVEN 4, CONNECTICUT” in small black lettering at the middle left front; the old style one digit “postal zone” number denotes pre-1963 manufacture.
