The first Hudson's Bay Company trading post was Fort Charles, founded in 1668 on James Bay in present day Quebec. For over 300 years, Hudson’s Bay was famous for their top of the line wool trapper blankets, which were often traded to Native Americans (or First Nations as they’re called in Canada) for hides and pelts. The “point” system on the blankets did not denote value in beaver pelts, a common misconception, but simply translated to the size of the blanket, with most between 3.5-8 points. Many Hudson’s Bay blankets were custom made into wool duffle and overcoats from the 1950s-1970s. This Vintage 1960s Hudson's Bay Canada Custom 4 Point Red Wool Trapper Blanket Coat is in Very Good Condition, with some scattered spot mothing around the front hem, and with some scattered age wear evident. Most interestingly, it was custom made in the ca. 1960s from a striking Hudson’s Bay Co. 4 point red wool trapper blanket, and features the horizontal black points along the middle front, a wide black stripe across the lower front and back, a long, large hood, “gun” flaps at the shoulders for added protection against rain, flap covered lower front pockets, an inner mandarin collar, and turned up cuffs, and carries the original "HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY / 100% WOOL" gold and white maker's label at the middle front hem. It measures to about a Size 36 chest, features white “seed” bead decorated black satin piping on the collar, cuffs, “gun” flaps at the shoulders, and lower front pocket flaps, and is of a double breasted design with 6 rows of grayish black horn buttons down the front placket.
