Edward H. Bohlin was born in Sweden in 1895. He came to America at only 15 years old, arriving in New York in 1910, and followed the words of Horace Greeley to “head West”. By 1912, he was punching cattle in Montana. Four years later he was in Cody, Wyoming, driving a stagecoach, working at area ranches (one of which was owned by the legendary William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody himself), and learning to do leather work. By the early 1920s, he had moved to Hollywood, California and opened a leather shop to supply buckskins and leather harnesses to the movie studios. He expanded his business to include saddles, spurs, and holsters, and beautifully engraved sterling silver and gold fittings on high end Western gear quickly became his calling card. Ed Bohlin soon became known as the “saddle maker to the stars”, and Bohlin made buckles, spurs, and jewelry could be spotted on legends such as Gene Autry, Clark Gable, and John Wayne. This pair of Vintage 1960s Ed Bohlin Hollywood Calif. Engraved Buckles & Floral Tooled Leather Spur Straps are in Near Mint, New Old Stock Condition, with some light overall drying and stiffening, and with some light scattered darkening evident. Most interestingly, they boast incredible floral carved hand tooling throughout, sport gorgeous engraved silver buckles (though not marked “Sterling”, they certainly have the appearance of .925 silver), and are stamped at the undersides of those buckles and on the undersides of the leather straps with their maker, the legendary “BOHLIN MADE / CALIF. / HOLLYWOOD”.
