Sights / Optics: The front sight is a patridge blade, pinned to a ramp base which is integral to the solid, wide rib, which is serrated for glare reduction. The rear sight is a square notched leaf in a S&W micrometer click base that is adjustable for windage and elevation. The topstrap is drilled and tapped for optics.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a one-piece pebble-textured black rubber S&W branded Hogue Monogrip with finger grooves which leaves the top portion of the backstrap exposed. There are light scuffs handling marks. The texturing is strong. Overall, the grip is in Very Good-Fine condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some stubborn fouling. In this writer's opinion, this bore rates 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few thin scratches. There are minor scuffs and swirls. The action shows light operational wear with a thin turn-line on the cylinder. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: For decades, .22 WMR was the king of the rimfire cartridges but in 2002, Hornady introduced their new .17 HMR at SHOT Show. The new cartridge was a .22 Magnum case necked down to .17 caliber, providing even greater velocities for a flat-shooting varmint round. At the time of introduction, only two rifles were chambered for the new round, but by the 2003 SHOT Show, more than 18 companies had rifles and handguns chambered for the new cartridge, and Remington, Hornady, Federal, and CCI were making ammunition. Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 647 at the 2003 SHOT Show but production was limited with production ceasing in late 2004. With its 8 3/8" barrel, the 647 is able to wring just about all the performance you can get out the cartridge in a handgun and makes it great for pest elimination at longer ranges, especially with the frame drilled and tapped to accept a scope mount.
