Sights/Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch dovetailed into the barrel.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is two piece wood with a smooth straight wrist grip and smooth forend. The wood shows only some minor pressure dings, drag lines, and rub marks. The buttplate has turned to patina and shows moderate handling wear. There are no chips or cracks. The furniture rates in Very Good Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is grey and the rifling is worn. There is moderate erosion and pitting throughout the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 4/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 5% of its finish. The finish has turned mostly to patina with edge wear, oxidation spots, and operational wear. The screw heads show little to no tooling and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this firearm rates in Fair to Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Remington No. 4 "Solid Frame" was manufactured between 1890 and 1900 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic firearm. Produced by Remington Arms Company, the No. 4 was one of Remington's most successful lightweight sporting rifles and utilized the company's renowned rolling block action. The early "Solid Frame" configuration predates the later Lever Take-Down models and is appreciated by collectors for its simple, robust construction and historical significance.
