Sights/Optics: There are currently no front or rear sights. There are filled screw holes where they would be mounted. The top of the receiver has two weaver bases ready for an optic, though none is present.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is one piece wood with a raised comb, semi-pistol grip, smooth forend, and a serrated synthetic Remington buttplate. The buttplate has moderate handling wear. The furniture shows scattered pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. The LOP measures 13.75" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no chips or cracks. The furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There are a few light spots of pitting in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its original metal finish. The finish shows a large spot of pitting at the muzzle that has been scrubbed. The barrel has spots of freckling and other light scrub marks. The receiver is largely unblemished. The screw heads show little to no tooling and retain turnable slots. There is some oxidation on the buttplate screws. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Remington Model 788 was manufactured in 1967 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic rifle. Produced by Remington, the Model 788 was introduced as an economical bolt-action sporting rifle but quickly earned a reputation for exceptional accuracy. Its rear-locking bolt design and rigid receiver contributed to accuracy levels that often rivaled more expensive rifles of the era.

Chambered in .222 Remington with a 24 inch barrel, this rifle is configured for one of the most inherently accurate varmint cartridges of the mid-20th century. The .222 Remington dominated benchrest competition for many years and remains respected for its precision and mild recoil. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 7 out of 10, showing moderate wear consistent with age and use. The action functions correctly.
