Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a serrated ramped base screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable u-notch sight assembly screwed to the barrel. The top of the receiver has two pairs of drilled, tapped, and filled holes.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one piece skip-line checkered deluxe with ebony capped pistol grip, reinforcement pin, monte-carlo comb with cheek piece, checkered hard rubber buttplate, sling studs front and rear, and ebony tipped forend. The LOP measures approximately 13 1/4" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The checkering is crisp with faint peak wear. There are no chips or cracks. There are a few minor handling marks. The stock rates in Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish is strong and complete throughout. There are a few faint handling marks. The markings are clear. The screwheads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Remington’s decision to rename the .280 Remington as 7mm Express Remington in the late 1970s was a short-lived marketing strategy intended to leverage the popularity of 7mm cartridges, particularly the 7mm Remington Magnum. Although ballistically identical to the .280 Remington, the “7mm Exp. Rem.” designation appeared on the 700 for only about two years before Remington reverted to the original name, making rifles so marked a distinct and time-specific variant. Manufactured in 1979, this Remington Model 700 BDL represents the height of Remington’s classic sporting rifle era, when the Model 700 had become the dominant American bolt-action design. Chambered in 7mm Express Remington with a 22 inch barrel, it reflects the period focus on flat-shooting, high-velocity performance in a refined hunting package, enhanced by the deluxe BDL configuration with skip-line checkering, Monte Carlo stock with cheekpiece, ebony accents, and hinged floorplate.

Condition is outstanding, with approximately 99% of the original blue finish remaining and only minor handling marks present. The walnut stock is clean and well preserved with crisp checkering and no structural issues, and the bore is bright with sharp rifling. Factory iron sights remain intact, the receiver is properly drilled and tapped, and the action functions correctly. Overall, this is a high-condition 1979 Model 700 BDL that retains its original presentation and the classic appeal associated with Remington’s late-1970s sporting rifles.
