This lot features a pair of North & Judd "Hercules Bronze" Star Brand cowboy spurs. The spurs are constructed of bronze with engraved decoration along the shanks and feature star rowels. The heel bands are marked "Hercules Bronze," a trade designation used by North & Judd for their bronze Western hardware. The overall pattern closely follows the classic Buermann style spurs that were widely used in the American West.

North & Judd Manufacturing Company of New Britain, Connecticut was established in 1878 and registered its Anchor Brand trademark in 1879. In 1926 the company purchased the August Buermann Manufacturing Company of Newark, New Jersey, one of the largest and most influential spur makers in the United States. After acquiring Buermann, North & Judd continued producing many Buermann patterns and marks alongside their own products, including Hercules Bronze and Star Brand variations.

The August Buermann company operated from 1868 to 1926 and produced a wide range of English, military, Mexican, and cowboy spur styles. Buermann patterns such as the OK style and Dom Pedro style became well known throughout the Western saddle trade and were widely distributed through major retailers including Sears Roebuck catalogs in the late 19th century.

A listing from the Denver Dry Goods catalog of 1935 describes similar examples as "No. 91-2315 Hercules Bronze Metal Spur, finely engraved," offered at a price of $2.50. There are the initials "B-D" just to the right of the "HERCULES BRONZE" mark on the right spur. These spurs show honest age patina with clear markings and attractive engraving, making them a representative example of early 20th century Western riding equipment produced during the period when North & Judd continued Buermann style spur production.
