Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to a serrated, ramped, hooded base screwed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a folding "U"-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The left of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight, the top is drilled, tapped and filled for an optic mount (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with capped forend, capped pistol grip, straight comb, checkered black plastic Marlin buttplate, Marlin "bullseye" in the belly, and sling swivels front and rear. The stocks have a few light nicks and scratches, most at the rear of the forend. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/4" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear with some stubborn residue in the well defined checkering. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue, Gold Colored Trigger

Finish Originality: Original, numbers match.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp Micro-Groove rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, just a little stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. There are some scattered freckles of minor oxidation, mostly on the receiver flats. There are some scattered minor nicks, scuffs and small scratches. The action shows light operational wear. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Marlin Model Golden 39A 4th Variation rifle. It has a fluted comb, pistol grip with grip cap and a black plastic buttplate, with both of the latter being mounted with white spacers. This 24" barreled rifle has iron sights, and the receiver has provision for either an optic or receiver sight (none present). This takedown rifle is in about Fine overall condition with 94% of its metal finish remaining. The bore is mostly bright with sharp Micro-Groove rifling and no erosion. The Marlin collectors should show an interest in this rifle as well as the shooters looking for a reliable rimfire rifle. This rifle would be great for teaching a new shooter the basics of safety and marksmanship, and is light enough that you could carry it while hunting rabbits in the field all day without it wearing you out.
