Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked "BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN UTAH & MONTREAL P. Q." and "MADE IN JAPAN". The right side of the barrel is marked "CALIBER .22 LONG RIFLE / BROWNING PATENTS". The lower right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number, "07069NZ646". The receiver features fine floriate engraving on the sides and top with animals inset in gold.

Sights/Optics: The front sight is a gold beaded blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a flip-up u-notch adjustable for elevation dovetailed into the barrel. There are drilled, tapped, and filled holes in front and behind the rear sight.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stocks are two-piece wood with checkered semi-pistol grip and beavertail forend, fluted straight comb, and serrated sheet steel buttplate. There are very minor storage marks. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP is 13 3/4" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Overall, the stocks rate in Excellent - Like New condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is little to no operation or takedown wear. The screw heads are sharp and all markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is no play in the barrel to the receiver when assembled. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork and Accessories: This rifle includes a serial-matching Browning factory cardboard box and owner’s manual.

Our Assessment: The Browning SA-22 is one of John M. Browning’s most elegant and enduring rimfire designs, originally introduced in 1914 and celebrated for its refined handling, bottom-ejecting action, and true takedown capability. This Grade VI High Grade example represents the pinnacle of factory production, pairing the classic SA-22 profile with extensive factory engraving and gold animal inlays executed by Browning’s Japanese craftsmen during the late 20th century. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, a cartridge synonymous with accuracy, economy, and recreational shooting since the 1880s, the SA-22 has long been regarded as a gentleman’s rifle, equally at home in the field or as a presentation-grade collectible.

This 1991-manufactured rifle remains in outstanding condition, retaining nearly all of its original blued finish with crisp engraving, sharp screw heads, and exceptionally well-preserved wood. The bore is pristine, the takedown system locks up solidly, and the rifle retains its factory box and owner’s manual, further enhancing its desirability. As a Grade VI example, this SA-22 stands well above standard production models, offering a combination of artistry, mechanical refinement, and Browning heritage that continues to resonate with collectors decades after manufacture.
