Bore Condition: The bore is obstructed, and we were unable to remove the obstruction for inspection.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows typical service-related wear with thinning on the barrel, receiver, bolt handle, and floorplate. There are scattered areas of patina, edge wear, and small surface scuffs. The screw heads are lightly tooled with serviceable slots. The pins are clean. The markings are mostly sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Arisaka Type 99 is one of the most iconic military bolt-action rifles of World War II, issued widely to Japanese Imperial forces. Produced at the Nagoya Arsenal between the late 1930s and 1945, these rifles were known for their ruggedness and strength, particularly in the later war years when material shortages led to reduced refinement.

This example bears many of the hallmarks of a typical battlefield-return rifle. The duffel-cut stock, removed monopod, and absent AA wings on the rear sight all suggest a rifle brought home by a GI. The finish remains strong with approximately 80% retained, and the matching wood stock retains its character despite service wear.

While the bore is currently obstructed, the mechanics are sound, and the historical and collector value of this Nagoya Arsenal Type 99 remains significant. It’s a solid piece for collectors of WWII militaria or Japanese arms looking for a representative example of Japan’s wartime service rifles.
