Sights / Optics: The front sight is a protected inverted V-blade. The rear sight is fixed peep sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two-piece wood configuration with a straight comb, semi-pistol grip, smooth forend, and wood buttplate. The buttstock has been sanded, softening some edges and the arsenal markings. There are scattered light scratches and compression marks throughout the wood. There are no cracks. The stock rates in about Good overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows general operational wear with thinning on the bolt handle, edges of the receiver, and contact points on the barrel. The screw heads are lightly tooled with serviceable slots. The pins are unmarred. The markings are partially worn but still legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Arisaka Type 99 rifle, developed by the Japanese Empire during World War II, was a rugged and reliable bolt-action service rifle designed to replace the earlier Type 38. Chambered in the more powerful 7.7x58mm cartridge, it featured updates such as a chrome-lined bore and anti-aircraft rear sights, though late-war "last-ditch" examples often lacked such refinements. This example was produced by the Kokura Arsenal, one of Japan’s major military arms factories. Collectors of WWII militaria and Japanese firearms will appreciate this rifle’s originality and solid condition. With its complete configuration, excellent bore, and correct arsenal marks, it’s a worthy addition to any historical collection or a good shooter-grade option for enthusiasts of military surplus rifles.
