William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s stature in the history of the Old West rivals that of such legends as Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, General Custer, Jesse James, and Billy the Kid. Buffalo Bill was instrumental in the founding of Cody, Wyoming, the city at the foothills of Yellowstone which still bears his name, and in which our company is headquartered. Buffalo Bill was an ardent baseball fan, and it’s only fitting that Cody, Wyoming hosted a semi-pro baseball team for decades. They were called the Cody Dogies, and they played in the Midland Empire baseball league. This Historic Vintage 1930s Cody, Wyoming Semi-Pro Baseball Team Lowe & Campbell Pinstripe Wool Uniform is in Good Condition, with some light fraying to the soutache of the jersey at the back right collar, moderate scattered brownish soiling to the jersey, heavy scattered brownish soiling to the pants, an 8” well stitched repair at the front left ankle of the pants, a circular area of moth tearing at the back right thigh of the pants, several scattered small moth holes in the pants, and with moderate overall age wear evident. Most interestingly, this uniform comes with a photograph, a signed letter, and newspaper clippings of provenance tying it to the original owner, Coon Lee, who played on the Cody, WY semi-pro baseball team from 1936-1940. Included with the uniform is an original photo of the Cody baseball team, with Coon Lee standing second from right in the back, a signed letter from Alice Lee, Coon’s wife, stating this was his uniform, and detailing how he came to be a member of the Cody semi-pro ball club, and three newspaper clippings extolling the play of the Cody Dogies baseball team, with the box score listing Lee as the 3rd baseman for one of those games, with two base knocks out of four plate appearances. The jersey boasts “CODY” emblazoned in sewn black felt lettering across the chest, sports black rayon soutache at the half length short sleeves and around the collar, and carries the original 1930s “LOWE & CAMPBELL / LC / ATHLETIC GOODS CO.” maker’s label at the inside neck. It’s a Size 42, bears all of the original white plastic buttons down the three quarters length pullover front placket, and exhibits a small letter “C” for Cody sewn in matching black felt at the left shoulder. The uniform is crafted of blue pinstriped thick white flannel wool, and features sewn ventilation eyelets at the underarms of the jersey and inseam of the pants. The pants are a Size 32, sport a large open top right seat pocket, belt “tunnels” (the game was truly “hardball” in those days, and if a player was wearing trousers with exposed belt loops instead of tunnels, infielders would hold onto those loops to impede the runner’s progress), and white plastic buttons down the fly, and carry the original, matching “LOWE & CAMPBELL / LC / ATHLETIC GOODS CO.” maker’s label on the white cotton lining at the interior front right waist.
