Sights/Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable elevation v/u-notch screwed into the barrel.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is two piece wood with a straight comb, straight wrist grip, smooth forend, and a checkered synthetic Winchester buttplate. The buttplate has light to moderate handling wear. The furniture shows pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. The LOP measures 12.75" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There is a crack at the top of the buttplate. The furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is grey and the rifling is worn. There is light pitting scattered throughout the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about none of it's original finish as it has it has either turned to patina, worn away, or been scrubbed. The finish shows spots of patina, light pitting, scratches, scrub marks, and other related blemishes. The screw heads range from lightly tooled to unmarred and retain turnable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This first year Winchester Second Model 1906 was manufactured in 1906 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic rifle. Produced by Winchester, the Model 1906 was introduced as a more economical companion to the Model 1890 while retaining the same reliable slide-action design. Second Model rifles incorporated refinements over the earliest production guns, and first year examples of this variation are of particular interest to Winchester collectors.

Chambered in .22 Short with a 20 inch barrel, this rifle reflects the classic gallery rifle configuration that made the Model 1906 so popular during the early 20th century. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5 out of 10, showing moderate wear consistent with age and use. The action functions correctly.

The furniture rates in Very Good condition with honest handling wear and solid structure. This rifle retains essentially none of its original metal finish, as it has either worn away, turned to patina, or been scrubbed over the course of its long service life. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair condition and stands as an honest first year example of the Winchester Second Model 1906.
