Sights / Optics: There are no iron sights installed or included. The barrel has a pair of drilled, tapped and filled holes at the front for mounting an iron sight. The bridge has a pair of drilled, tapped and filled holes. The left-rear of the receiver has a pair of drilled, tapped and filled holes for a receiver sight. The chamber ring and rear of the barrel each have a pair of drilled and tapped holes with sight blocks and rings holding a Redfield 16x scope with target-dot fine-crosshair reticle. Both threaded lense caps are included. The scope has minor wear on the body, a couple of spots of light erosion, most notable in the elevation turret knurling, and fairly clear glass.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece smooth walnut with a pistol grip, straight comb, basketweave-textured black rubber Pachmayr buttpad and inlaid 2.5" accessory rail in the forend. There is a hole in the belly for a sling stud, none present. The top-front of the comb is relieved for clearance of the bolt. The front edges of the forearm are drilled for 2 screws which are part of the adjustable barrel bedding system. The screws bear against the free-floating barrel. The stock has some light nicks, compressions and scuffs. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad has no notable wear or damage. The stock rates in Very Good-plus overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original, the bolt is serial-matched.
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is infrequent, faint oxidation in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9+/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning lightly at most edges. The balance is mostly in finish wear on the floorplate and trigger guard. Otherwise, there are only a few minor marks and light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Remington's 40X rifle dates back to 1955, when the company introduced the original 40-X match rifle in caliber .22 Long Rifle. These rifles, adapted from Remington’s Model 722 action, quickly established a reputation for accuracy and reliability. Subsequent to the introduction of the Model 700, the 40-X was introduced in other calibers for various specialized competition events, including bench rest, free rifle, and national match types. Calibers included the original .22 Long Rifle, .222 Remington, .223 Remington, and .308 Winchester, among others. The 40XS put the 40X into SWAT black and designated it as the 40 XS Tactical Weapon System. Testing found that this rifle can compete with the best custom precision tactical rifles in terms of accuracy and reliability.
This 40-X is among the first ever produced, serial 0165, made in the rifle's introductory year. It is the original .22 LR target model in the "Rangemaster" stock, equipped with a vintage 16x Redfield scope. Despite its age, the rifle is in Fine condition and an excellent example of the quality and precision Remington was producing at the time.
