Sights/Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch dovetailed into the barrel.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished furniture is two piece wood with a straight comb, straight-wrist grip,12-rib forend, and a smooth metal buttplate. The buttplate has some old wear, but is finished over in cold blue. The furniture shows minimal wear aside from a couple minor pressure dings. The LOP measures 12.75" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no chips or cracks. The furniture rates in Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Nonoriginal. The barrel markings are nonoriginal. The receiver and buttplate have cold blue applied. The barrel, magazine tube, and bolt have been refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp with faint fouling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its nonoriginal metal finish. The finish shows edge wear, some faint pitting on the barrel that has been finished over, and occasional scratches. The screw heads are lightly tooled and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. It has the scarce 90-AA tang markings. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine condition as an antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This second year Winchester Model 1890 1st Model was manufactured in 1891 and qualifies as an Antique firearm. Produced by Winchester, the Model 1890 was John Browning's first pump-action rimfire design and quickly became one of the most successful slide-action rifles of its era. This example bears the scarce 90-AA tang markings, a desirable early feature associated with first model production.

Chambered in .22 Short with a 24.375 inch barrel, this rifle reflects the original gallery and small game configuration of the Model 1890. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5 out of 10, indicating excellent internal condition. The receiver and buttplate show cold blue application. The barrel, magazine tube, and bolt have been refinished, and the rifle retains approximately 95% of its nonoriginal metal finish.

The refinished furniture rates in Fine condition with clean lines and attractive appearance. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine condition and stands as a scarce early 1891 1st Model Winchester 1890 with 90-AA tang marking and strong bore condition.
