Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked "LEFT arrow" twice with "NHC". The elevation knob is marked from 2-12.

 

 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment. The LOP measures 13" inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the plate. The wood for this rifle appears to be a replacement set that has been lightly sanded to smooth out the wood. As a result the wood shows only some very minor scattered surface level lines and very small compressions. There is a small chip missing from the upper handguard on the left side at the rear band that can only be seen in good lighting. There is some finish loss on the right side from the op rod rubbing on the wood. There are no visible cracks in the stock. The butt plate has lost its finish and shows surface rust. The door is stiff and only opens part way, however the spring is strong, the door closes and does not rattle. Overall this stock set is in Very Good+ condition and would rate higher if not for the butt plate.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with well defined rifling showing visible erosion in the grooves throughout the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 3 and a throat of 3. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6.5/10.

 

 

Overall Condition: The rifle retains 90% of its metal finish. The bolt and receiver show minor wear on the friction surfaces. The metal finish has turned green with age and shows thinning finish on the receiver and bolt. The cylinder lock shows finish loss. The trigger guard shows some surface rust in the safety cut. The action is very smooth. The screw heads are mostly sharp with light tool marks and the markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.

 

 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand was manufactured in February 1944 and later fitted with a Danish VAR barrel dated January 1960, well-known for its exceptional steel quality and superb accuracy potential. The rifle shows clear evidence of post-war European service, with numerous replacement components sourced from Beretta and Breda Meccanica Bresciana (BMB), both of which were contracted by NATO-aligned nations to maintain and rebuild Garands during the Cold War. These features strongly suggest this rifle served in Denmark under the U.S. Lend-Lease and MAP support programs, where Garands were heavily used, meticulously maintained, and ultimately rebuilt with high-quality Italian parts. This example stands as a functional, authentic piece of military heritage, representing both WWII American production and the later European programs that kept the Garand in frontline and reserve service for decades.
