Sights / Optics: Standard front with lock-bar rear. Installed is an M82 2.5x scope with tapered post reticle, covered turrets and extendable sunshade set in a Griffin and Howe QD mount. The sight picture is clear, the turrets adjust with positive clicks, the eye piece is soft and pliable, the sunshade functions correctly.

 

 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a traditional semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment. The LOP is 13”. The wood shows marks, compressions, scratches and chips scattered throughout. The right side of the wrist shows a crack that has been repaired with what appears to be bedding compound that extends to under the receiver bevel. There is also a series of chips that have been repaired the same way in front of the bottom metal. There is a small crack forming at the rear of the rear upper handguard piece. The metal butt plate retains its finish showing little wear, the door functions correctly. Overall the stock set is in Good condition as repaired.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. The bore shows scattered minor erosion, mainly on the edges of the lands. Our gauges read muzzle at 1.5, throat at 2.5. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 8.75/10

 

 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains 95% of its metal finish. The metal has turned a dark brown/black from age. There is finish thinning on some of the edges, mainly the charging handle and trigger guard. The bolt shows very minor rub wear. There is some discoloration on the receiver below the eye piece. The markings are clear. There is scattered cosmoline in recesses. Overall this rifle is in Very Good+ condition.

 

 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The M1C Garand represents the U.S. Army’s first standardized sniper variant of the legendary M1, developed late in World War II to provide a semi-automatic precision rifle for frontline use. Adopted in 1944/45, the M1C used a Griffin & Howe side-mounted base paired with the M82 telescopic sight, allowing the rifle to retain its iron sights and enbloc-clip loading capability. While production numbers were limited and wartime deployment was relatively brief, the M1C continued service into the Korean War. This Springfield Armory M1C from January 1945 is fitted with a correct Springfield barrel dated 12-1944. It was sold by the CMP in 2014 as an authentic M1C and includes its CMP certificate of authenticity and original paperwork. The rifle is equipped with the proper Griffin & Howe mount and M82 scope, retains a desirable lock-bar rear sight, and is stocked in a correct “SA GAW” marked stock. With its documented CMP provenance, correct late-war configuration, and strong original components, this rifle stands as an outstanding example of a genuine M1C.
