Sights / Optics: There is a silver-colored bead at the muzzle. The top of the receiver is serrated for glare reduction.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece walnut with a post-war slide handle with grooved sides and flat bottom, flat-bottom pistol grip, fluted straight comb and checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate. There are a few scattered handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear, mostly at the heel and at the edges, with well defined checkering and lettering. Overall, the stocks are in about Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish is strong and complete throughout. Parts of the receiver are turning a plum hue. There is some thinning on the leading edges. There are a few minor handling marks. There is light operational wear on the barrel and the action bar from the slide. The screws are sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage post-war Winchester Model 42 standard grade .410 bore pump action shotgun from 1949. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin the Model 12. Only 159,353 Model 42s were made. This one is in Fine Plus condition with light wear consistent with gentle use and proper storage. The shotgun retains a pristine bore and strong mechanics. This shotgun would make a fine addition to any collection, especially if you have a new generation of shooters to train.
