Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade pinned to a base integral to the barrel. The rear sight is a folding carbine style ladder sight. The upper tang is drilled, tapped, and filled for a tang sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is two piece smooth wood with banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, with a steel carbine buttplate. The left side of the receiver has a saddle ring. There is a sling ring installed in the belly of the buttstock. There is modest handling wear. There are scratches, nicks, and compressions. There is a crack in the bottom left of the forend at the front and another on the bottom at the receiver. The LOP is 12 7/8" from the front of the trigger to the rear of the buttplate. The plate has been refinished. Overall the stocks rate in Good condition as refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is defined. There is light erosion down the length. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 7/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its current metal finish. The balance of the finish is strong throughout. The action shows light operational wear. There is minor intermittent erosion under the new finish. There is mild to heavy pitting along the barrel where metal meets the forend. The screw heads are tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Winchester introduced the John M. Browning-designed Model 1892 as a smaller, lighter counterpart to the Model 1886, optimized for compact cartridges traditionally shared between rifles and revolvers. Its twin vertical locking lugs, trim receiver, and smooth action made the 20" carbine particularly useful for horseback, ranch, and field carry. Chambered in .44-40 W.C.F., this example represents the largest and most historically recognizable of the original Model 1892 chamberings.
This 1918 carbine has been refinished and retains about 97% of its current blue finish, though intermittent underlying erosion and mild to heavy pitting beneath the forend remain evident. The refinished stocks show scattered handling wear and two forend cracks, while the bright 7/10 bore retains defined rifling with light erosion. Its action functions correctly, the trigger is crisp, and the half-cock position operates as intended. Despite its refinish and underlying metal wear, this remains a handsome, functional .44-40 Winchester carbine with the compact profile and substantial bore collectors associate with the classic Model 1892.
