Sights / Optics: There is no provision for iron sights. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for optic mounts (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered deluxe walnut with recoil lug, capped pistol grip, ebony nosecap, straight comb with shadow-line cheekpiece, orange rubber Winchester buttpad and inlaid sling mounts front and rear. There is a scratch above the rear sling mount on the right of the belly. The stock otherwise shows only light handling marks. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The grip cap has engraving and gold-line motif to match the action. Overall, the stock is in Fine-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blue with Gold-Line Motif

Finish Originality: Per Winchester (now BACO) customer service, this rifle was returned to the Custom Shop in 1994 and remained there for approximately one year, returned to the customer in 1995. The finish is original to the Winchester Custom Shop. The bolt is serial-matched to the receiver.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, this bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The action shows faint operational wear. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of hunters for 90 years. It is reliable, robust, and accurate, one of the benchmarks by which all bolt action rifles are measured. It has more than earned its nickname of "The Riflemans Rifle" and is one of the most iconic rifles around. While the rifle was redesigned in 1964, Winchester would bring back the original controlled-round-feed bolt due to popular demand, and they are still in production to this day.

This example is of particular interest as it is a custom-grade gun. With Super Grade markings on the barrel and a beautiful Super-Grade stock, we have contacted Winchester (now BACO) to get some more information about the rifle due to its beautiful engraving and gold-line motif. Their records indicate that the rifle shipped in 1994 and was returned to the Custom Shop shortly thereafter where it remained for about a year. This would explain the presence of both Winchester's standard proof and the Custom Shop proof on the barrel. It also bears a serial number in the re-cycled pre-64 range with a G-prefix, of which the first 10,000 or so were set aside for the Custom Shop. In addition to the engraving on the receiver and barrel shank, the floorplate has a gorgeous Winchester horseman logo in molded gold with the engraving motif continuing onto the trigger guard and grip cap. Chambered for .270 Winchester, this gorgeous rifle should prove to be as useful in the field as it will be pretty on display. Please see our photos and good luck!
