Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture set between protective wings. The windage knob is marked "LEFT arrow" twice and "DRC". The elevation knob is marked "2-12".

This M84 scope has covered turrets marked 0-9 for elevation and L/R 0-20 in increments of 5 for windage. The scope uses a tapered post vertical reticle. The sight picture is very clear. The knobs turn with positive clicks and the sunshade is functional. The scope shows some minor marks and lines on the exterior. The rubber eyepiece is pliable. Overall the scope is in Excellent condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking loop and a metal butt plate with a hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13 inches. The rifle also has a leather cheek piece to offset the shooter's head for the scope. The leather cuff shows patina around all the brass grommets. The wood was lightly sanded and refinished showing some discoloration from storage. There are some very minor scattered marks with no cracks. There are two very small chips just in front of the bottom metal. The metal butt plate has been refinished and shows some rub wear and pitting around the edges under the refinish. The checkering is still semi sharp and the door spring is strong. Overall the stock is in Very Good+ condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion/pitting in the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 1+ and a throat of 1. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains 98% of its metal finish. The bolt and action show some very minor rub wear on the friction surfaces. The edges of the trigger guard and muzzle show some thinning finish. The barrel and op rod show a few very small marks. The left side of the gas cylinder has a small series of nicks in the metal. The markings are clear and the screw heads sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Fine+ condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the leather cheek piece, scope, sling, packing sheet, original sales sheet, carrying case for scope, CMP cardboard box with foam, cleaning rod, oiler, grease, brush, handle, buffer, brush, hider flash, and holder for cleaning patch.

Our Assessment: This Winchester M1-D was sold by the CMP in 1998 and features a receiver originally manufactured in May 1942, later converted to the M1-D sniper configuration. The rifle is fitted with a Springfield Armory barrel dated August 1952, along with the correct M84 telescope sight and M2 flash hider. The M1-D was developed as the standardized sniper variant of the M1 Garand, incorporating a barrel block and removable scope mount with a leather cheek pad to allow the rifle to retain its standard configuration when the optic was removed. The rifle has been refinished, and the finish appears consistent with an arsenal refinish, rather than a modern commercial restoration which is consistent with the stock marking "RA," for Raritan Arsenal. Our gauges show a muzzle erosion of 1+ and throat erosion of 1, indicating very little measurable wear and plenty of remaining bore life. Complete with its M84 telescope sight and M2 flash hider, this CMP-sold Winchester M1-D is an excellent representation of a rifle that continued to serve long after its original 1942 manufacture.
