Markings: The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN U.S.A.PAT.JUNE.26.88.DEC.6.92.NOV.27.06”, “MOD.1890-”, and “22 LONG”. The front and rear sights are marked with a patent date. The top tang is marked “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK”. The bottom tang is marked “361924”. The bottom of the receiver is marked “361924 / A”.

Barrel Length: 24”, Octagonal.

Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch leaf with elevator screw, screwed to the barrel. The top tang is drilled, tapped, and filled for a tang sight (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece wood with a round 12-grooved slide handle, straight grip, straight comb, and crescent steel buttplate. The LOP measures 12 3/4" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are scratches, nicks, scrapes, and compressions throughout. There is some more prominent wear on the left side of the buttstock at the buttplate. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is dark and the rifling is rounded where not interrupted by erosion. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 3/10.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 60% of its finish. The action shows operational wear. There is faint erosion throughout the receiver, more prominent on the bottom. There is thinning and finish loss on the leading edges. There are a few dings on the edges of the barrel’s octagon. There is oxidation throughout. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, the rifle is in Fair - Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

This example, manufactured in 1908, is a Third Model takedown chambered for .22 Long—an uncommon chambering compared to the more typical .22 Short and .22 WRF variants. The rifle retains approximately 60% of its original blue finish with a well-aged patina, some edge wear, and scattered oxidation throughout. The octagonal barrel’s edges are still presentable, though lightly dinged, and the rifle’s grooved walnut pump handle and buttstock exhibit honest wear consistent with field use but remain structurally sound. The bore is dark with heavy erosion, rating about 3/10, though the mechanics remain functional, and the takedown system operates correctly. The tang is drilled and tapped for a rear sight, offering room for restoration or improvement. For collectors of early Winchester rimfires or those looking for a turn-of-the-century pump-action classic with character, this 1890 is a solid representative of one of Winchester’s longest-running and most beloved models.
