Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Lyman beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel; the sight is installed backward. The rear dovetail has been filled with a blank. Two sight blocks are mounted to the barrel and support a Lyman 438-Field 4x scope with crosshair reticle. The scope glass is fairly clear with visible internal dust, the body has light wear and faint oxidation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered deluxe walnut with straight grip, straight comb and case-color crescent steel buttplate. The stocks have only a few scattered minor marks. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The fit at the tangs is slightly imperfect with minor gaps. The LOP measures 12 7/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has strong color with some scattered minor marks. Overall, the stocks are in about Excellent condition as not original to the gun.

Type of Finish: Blue & Case Color

Finish Originality: Professionally Restored; the barrel has been sleeved.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its current metal finish. The action shows light operational wear and there are a few scattered minor marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear, the barrel address is just a little shallow. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition as restored.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 is a classic American slide-action rifle designed by John Browning and produced by Winchester for over four decades. Chambered in .22 Short, this example is an early 20th-century piece that exemplifies the precision and craftsmanship Winchester was known for.

This particular rifle has been quite expertly restored with a professional barrel sleeve, deep blue and vibrant case color finish, and beautiful checkered walnut stocks. It is equipped with a classic Lyman 438-Field scope, making it both a functional shooter and a nostalgic display piece. The refinishing was professionally executed, preserving the rifle’s traditional lines while extending its useful life.
