A man’s cowboy hat, much like his countenance, often showed the creases, exposure to sun and the elements, and trials and tribulations endured on his hardscrabble journey. This Vintage 1930s J.C. Penney "Wyoming" Folk Art Signatures Wool Felt Cowboy Hat is in Good Condition, with some dark soiling at the top crown, some dark soiling to the once buff colored satin hatband, some reddish soiling around the red signature at the back brim, some brownish soiling at the interior top crown, some scattered brownish and dark soiling around the underside of the brim, and with some overall dusting, darkening, and age wear evident. Most interestingly, it’s an incredible piece of Western folk art, with over 150 signatures collected by the original owner from his friends and acquaintances around the exterior brim, the exterior crown, the top of the crown, and the underside of the brim, with one reading “OLD BESSIE 1930”, another being dated “June-20-1937”, and a few carrying well executed depictions of animals, including a donkey and a rattlesnake. It’s approximately a Size 7 1/2, boasts a fully intact brown leather sweatband, marked at the left side in gold with its maker, the famous “J.C. PENNEY CO.”, and embossed at the right side with the model, “WYOMING”, and carries two very intriguing documents tucked inside that sweatband. They are fraternity cards from the Order Of Elks lodge in Reno, Nevada, signed by the presumed original owner of the hat, “Edgar J. Myers”, with those documents both being dated in the early 1920s. Indeed, the consignor relates that he purchased this hat in the Reno, Nevada area. It’s constructed of buff colored wool felt, and is a fine example of a very rare, original Vintage 1930s J.C. Penney "Wyoming" Folk Art Signatures Wool Felt Cowboy Hat.
