The idea of using horse cavalry in US military tactics persisted until 1944, with landings on the Chinese coast being considered. Finally, the idea was shelved, and the cavalry went into action as infantry. The US Army had developed a stout leather M-1903 Springfield rifle scabbard to be used by cavalry troopers, and it proved just as useful for mechanized warfare, now mounted on Jeeps and Harley-Davidson WLA motorcycles, as it had been for the cavalry on horseback. Many WW1 Springfield rifle scabbards were retrofitted during WW2 with a brass charging handle cover riveted to the upper front to allow it to house the new M-1 Garand. This US Army WW2 Cavalry Jeep Harley WLA M-1 Garand Leather Rifle Scabbard is in Good Condition, with moderate indenting to the front throat, moderate drying and surface cracking to the attachment straps, moderate drying, wrinkling, and surface cracking to the upper and lower body, some OD paint present at the lower back body, some overall darkening, and with moderate overall age wear evident. Most interestingly, it boasts the classic darkened brass charging handle cover at the upper front, sports both of the original brown leather attachment straps with darkened metal "snap hooks", and is faintly marked at the upper back with its illegible maker and inspector initials, denoting the scabbard started life as a standard WW1 M-1903 Springfield rifle scabbard, and was then retrofitted during WW2 with the charging handle cover to accommodate the new M-1 Garand, although the scabbard can still house either rifle. It features the original sewn brown leather end "plug" at bottom, and is a fine example of a rare, original US Army WW2 Cavalry Jeep Harley WLA M-1 Garand Leather Rifle Scabbard.
