Nathan Starr was the preeminent maker of US military edged weapons before the rise of the Ames Sword Company of Cabotville (later Chicopee), Massachusetts. In the early post-Federal period, from the War of 1812 to the early 1830s, N. Starr was the best of the bunch in the nascent American edged weapons industry. They received a contract for 10,000 Model 1818 Dragoon Sabers, which they completed and delivered in 1821 and 1822. These were used in the early conflicts on the frontier, and likely served in Texas, the Mexican-American War, and even the early days of the Civil War. This US Army Post-War of 1812 N. Starr Model 1818 Cavalry Dragoon Saber is in Good Condition, with heavy overall cleaning, scratching, and pitting to the blade, heavy sharpening to the blade edge, some wavy bending to the blade tip, moderate cleaning, scratching, and pitting to the guard, ferrule, and backstrap/pommel, some scattered chipping and crazing to the grip, and with moderate overall age wear evident. Most interestingly, it features a 30 3/4” upswept fullered blade, sports the classic ridged leather over wood handle, leather “bumper pad” at the blade/guard join, and “P” shaped steel guard, steel ferrule, and steel backstrap/pommel, and is “US” stamped at the reverse ricasso, above the letter “P”, the inspector initials “LS” (for Luther Sage), and its maker, the famous “N.
