This lot features a U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1905 bayonet accompanied by a U.S. M1917 marked scabbard. The M1905 bayonet was originally adopted by the United States Army in 1905 for use with the Springfield M1903 rifle and later continued in service with the M1 Garand rifle during the early years of the Second World War. These long 16 inch blade bayonets were designed as sword bayonets and reflect the early 20th century doctrine that still emphasized reach and close combat capability. The blade on this example is marked "SA" with the Ordnance flaming bomb and the date "1918", indicating production at Springfield Armory during the First World War. The blade also bears serial number "887128," while the guard is marked with the number "1067".

The bayonet features a fullered blade with a dark finish and wooden grip panels secured by screws. The grips show typical age and handling wear consistent with military service. The included scabbard is marked "M-1917" and exhibits expected age and handling wear but remains solid and intact. Bayonets of this pattern saw widespread use from the First World War through the early years of the Second World War before being shortened or replaced by the M1 bayonet pattern.
