Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a v-notch dovetailed into the barrel.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is two piece wood with a straight-wrist grip, smooth forend, straight comb, and checkered hard rubber Stevens buttplate. The buttplate has moderate handling wear. The furniture shows light pressure dings, scuffs, and scratches. The LOP measures 13" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are several cracks running from the upper and lower tang. The furniture rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is light pitting and erosion at the muzzle end the bore. There is also a faint squib ring part way down the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its original metal finish. The receiver shows edge wear, light scratches, patina, and light oxidation. The barrel finish is strong, showing mainly surface scratches, light freckling, and patina. The screw heads show light tooling and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete, however most are double stamped. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Stevens No. 12 "Marksman" was manufactured between 1916 and 1933 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic rifle. Produced by J. Stevens Arms Company, the No. 12 Marksman was designed as an affordable and dependable single-shot sporting rifle. Utilizing Stevens' classic tip-up action, these rifles became popular among small game hunters and recreational shooters during the early decades of the 20th century.

Chambered in .32 Long Rimfire with a 22 inch barrel, this rifle is chambered for an obsolete cartridge that is now primarily of interest to collectors. The simple tip-up action reflects the practical design philosophy of the period and provides reliable operation. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5 out of 10, showing moderate wear consistent with age and use. The action functions correctly.
