Sights/Optics: The front sight is an adjustable post with protective wings and the rear sight is an adjustable “L” style flip aperture with markings for 200 and 400. There is an original ArmaLite 2.75x 20mm scope mounted atop the receiver. There is paperwork included to show that the optic was purchased with the gun. The glass is clear and the scope rates in Very Good condition.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The buttstock, pistol grip, and handguard are black synthetic reinforced polymer. The stock folds correctly. The rifle has a sling swivel mounted to the bottom of the pistol grip and one through the bayonet lug. The LOP measures 14” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttstock. The Handguard has light signs of wear. The pistol grip has light surface blemishes. There are no chips or cracks. The stock has light wear. Overall the stock set is in Very Good to Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp with light fouling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The finish shows light handling and operational wear. The pins and welds look solid. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This rifle presents in Very Good Plus overall condition, retaining approximately 98% of its original finish. The metal surfaces are clean and evenly preserved with little handling evidence, and the rifle maintains the crisp industrial profile that defines late production Sterling AR-180 rifles. The 18" barrel provides balanced handling and reflects the original sporting and service oriented configuration of the model.

Mechanically, the rifle is excellent. The bore rates 9.5 out of 10 with bright steel and strong rifling, indicating light use. The action functions correctly, cycling smoothly with the short stroke gas piston system that distinguishes the AR-180 from direct impingement AR designs. Lockup and operation are consistent and correct.

The Sterling produced AR-180 represents the final and most refined commercial chapter of the AR-180 lineage. Examples retaining the original ArmaLite scope are especially desirable, as these optics were purpose built for the platform and are far less commonly encountered today than the rifles themselves. High condition Sterling AR-180s with correct optics are increasingly difficult to find and are widely sought by collectors of Cold War era small arms.

With strong original finish, an excellent bore, correct mechanical function, and the inclusion of the original ArmaLite scope, this rifle stands as a highly desirable and collectible example of one of the most distinctive 5.56mm rifles of the late twentieth century.
