Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture set between protective wings. The windage knob is marked "LEFT arrow" twice and "DRC". The elevation knob is marked "2-12 NHC". This M84 scope has covered turrets marked 0-9 for elevation and L/R 0-20 in increments of 5 for windage. The scope uses a tapered post vertical reticle. The sight picture is very clear. The knobs turn with positive clicks and the sunshade is functional. The scope shows some minor marks and lines on the exterior. The rubber eyepiece is pliable. Overall the scope is in Excellent condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking loop and a metal butt plate with a hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13”. The rifle also has a leather cheek piece to offset the shooter's head for the scope. The leather cuff shows patina around all the brass grommets. The wood has been sanded and refinished showing minor scattered marks, lines and compressions. The metal butt plate has been refinished and shows some rub wear and pitting around the edges under the refinish. The checkering is semi-dulled but the door spring is strong. There are no cracks or notable chips. Overall the stock is in Fine+ condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion/pitting in the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 0+ and a throat of 1+. In this writer's opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains 98% of its metal finish. The bolt and action show some very minor rub wear on the friction surfaces. The trigger and muzzle show some thinning finish. The barrel and op rod show a few very small marks. The markings are clear and the screw heads sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the leather cheek piece, scope, leather sling, packing sheet, original sales sheet, box, sleeves, rod sections, canvas belt mounted scope case, oiler, chamber brush, rod buffer, swab holder, rod handle assembly, and two items in sealed bags.

Our Assessment: This Springfield M1D began life as a standard M1 Garand manufactured in August 1944 before being converted into the M1D sniper configuration sometime after the installation of its September 1952-dated Springfield barrel. Unlike the earlier M1C sniper rifles, the M1D was designed around a barrel-mounted scope block, allowing existing service rifles to be converted into sniper rifles during postwar rebuild programs and throughout the Korean War era. The M1D served as the U.S. Army's standard sniper rifle through Korea and into the early years of Vietnam. This example is a CMP-certified M1D. The rifle is fitted with a correct M84 telescope sight and includes the proper leather cheekpiece.

This rifle features an exceptional bore that shows very little use. In addition to the rifle itself, the package includes CMP paperwork and accessories supplied through the program. Combining a wartime receiver, correct barrel, authentic M84 optic, excellent bore condition, and CMP certification, this M1D represents an outstanding example of one of the most iconic U.S. military sniper rifles ever fielded.
