Markings: The left side of each barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON” while the right side is marked “22 LONG RIFLE CTG.” on the 17-3 and “22 M.R.F. CTG.” on the Model 48. Both revolvers display the Smith & Wesson monogram on the right sideplate. The yoke cut is marked with the model and revision on each. Serial numbers are present on the butt and match the respective revolvers.

Sights / Optics: Both revolvers are outfitted with square-notch rear sights adjustable for windage and elevation. The front sights are Patridge blades on serrated ramp bases.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The Model 17-3 is fitted with factory checkered target stocks with diamond center medallions. They are in Excellent condition with sharp points and light handling only. The Model 48 wears earlier magna-style checkered stocks with silver medallions. The diamonds are slightly softened, with finish wear and flattening from field use. The screw in the forestrap of the 48 is a non-original replacement.

Bore Condition: The bore on the 17-3 is bright and mirror clean, with sharp rifling and no visible erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10. The bore on the Model 48 is similarly bright with sharp rifling and minor fouling but no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: The Model 17-3 retains about 98% of its original blue. There is light operational wear at the cylinder and very minor marks from handling. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. The Model 48 retains about 92% of its finish with edgewear at the muzzle and trigger guard, a small patch of finish loss near the backstrap, and burn rings on the cylinder face. The screw in the forestrap is a replacement. The remaining screws are serviceable, and the markings are legible throughout.

Mechanics: Both revolvers function properly. Timing, lockup, and trigger pull are all consistent with proper operation. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The Model 17-3 includes its original blue two-piece box with matching serial number on the label and a folded Smith & Wesson safety insert. The Model 48 is not accompanied by any box or paperwork.

Our Assessment: This pair of Smith & Wesson rimfire revolvers represents two of the finest target and field options ever to emerge from the company’s K-frame lineup. The Model 17-3, with its crisp lines, matching box, and near-pristine finish, is a standout specimen from the golden era of American revolver manufacturing. It’s every bit the “Cadillac of .22s” that collectors prize, and this one, dated to 1975, showcases the high polish and precision typical of that period.

By contrast, the Model 48 offers its own unique appeal. This 1960 production magnum was clearly used and appreciated. The honest wear and replaced grip screw hint at years of loyal service, but it retains its soul—and its sharp bore. Its value lies not only in its collectibility but also in its enduring function and scarcity compared to the more commonly encountered Model 17s.

For collectors seeking a balanced display of condition and use history—or for shooters who want both a .22 LR and .22 Magnum on the same K-frame platform—this matched-length pair makes an exceptional addition to any safe or shooting bench.
