Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a serrated a base fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable elevation v/u-notch dovetailed into the barrel. The receiver has a pair of taps for mounting an aperture, though none is present.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is two piece wood with a checkered semi pistol grip, straight comb, checkered schnabel forend, and a serrated metal Savage buttplate. The buttplate has moderate handling wear and light oxidation. The furniture shows some light pressure dings, drag lines, and some wear on the left side of the forend checkering. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13" from the face of the trigger to the butt. The furniture rates in Very Good Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp with light fouling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This firearm retains about 96% of its original metal finish. The finish shows faint edge wear, some minor flecks of surface oxidation, and a few minor scratches. The screw heads range from unmarred to lightly tooled and retain turnable slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this firearm rates in Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Savage Model 99EG was manufactured in 1951 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic rifle. Produced by Savage Arms, the Model 99 is one of the most innovative lever-action sporting rifles ever designed. Its hammerless action and rotary magazine allowed the safe use of pointed spitzer bullets, giving it a ballistic advantage over traditional tubular magazine lever actions. The EG configuration remains one of the most popular and recognizable variations of the Model 99.

Chambered in .300 Savage with a 24 inch barrel, this rifle is paired with the cartridge for which the Model 99 became best known. The .300 Savage was developed specifically for the Model 99 and earned a reputation for excellent hunting performance while serving as the direct predecessor to the .308 Winchester. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9.5 out of 10, indicating excellent internal condition with strong rifling. The action functions correctly.
