Sights/Optics: The front sight is a raised blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a Springfield 1864 folding sight.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is two piece wood with a straight wrist grip, straight comb, and a smooth metal buttplate. The wood shows moderate wear with scuffs, nicks, and dings scattered throughout. There are several repairs made to the left side of the buttstock. There are no major chips or cracks. The screw holding the forend on has broken off. The LOP measures 13.5" from the face of the trigger to the rear of the butt. In this writer's opinion, the furniture rates in Very Good condition as an antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is dark and the rifling is worn. There is heavy oxidation and pitting throughout the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bores rate 4/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about none of its metal finish as it has mainly turned to patina or worn away. The metal surfaces show scratches, dings, and scattered pitting. Most notably, the metal under the forend shows heavy pitting. Additionally, the rear sling ring is broken and does not swivel. The screw heads show light to moderate tooling with fair to strong slots. The markings are worn, but legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition as an Antique.

Mechanics: The action DOES NOT function correctly. The hammer does not engage with a sear to stay cocked back. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a late Civil War to immediate postwar production Remington split breech carbine built for the .56-50 Spencer rimfire cartridge. No original finish remains, with the metal surfaces now entirely worn to patina, consistent with long service life and age. The 20" barrel gives the carbine its correct cavalry profile, and overall form remains clearly identifiable as a Large Frame Type II example.

The firearm does not function correctly. The hammer does not engage with the sear and will not remain cocked, rendering the carbine non functional. Because the primary fire control components are not operating as intended, the action cannot be relied upon and the firearm must not be fired in its current condition. The bore rates 4 out of 10, showing heavy wear consistent with many black powder firearms of this era. 

Remington's split breech carbines were among the many breechloading arms adopted during the rapid technological transition of the Civil War era. Chambered in .56-50 Spencer, these carbines were intended to use the same ammunition as the Spencer repeating rifle, simplifying logistics for mounted troops. The Type II Large Frame represents the refined form of the design produced near the end of the war and shortly thereafter.

As presented, this carbine should be evaluated as a historical artifact, restoration candidate, or display piece, rather than a shooter. Despite its non functional condition, it remains an authentic and important example of mid nineteenth century American military arms development from one of the nation's premier manufacturers of the period.
