Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass blade. The rear sight is a V-grooved hammer.

Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are one piece smooth wood. The grips show minimal handling marks and look fantastic. The 3rd model shoulder stock has only factory marks on the metal. There are no chips or cracks. The furniture rates in about Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: The barrels and cylinders are blued, the frames, loading levers and hammers are case hardened, and the grip frames are brass.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bores are both bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bores. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: These pistols retain about 99% of their finish. The only notable marks are a few minor blemishes from storage over the years. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this pistol rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is an exceptional matched cased pair of Colt 1860 Army U.S. Cavalry Commemorative percussion revolvers, each chambered for .44 caliber round ball with 8" barrels. Both revolvers present in outstanding condition, retaining approximately 99% of their original finish and exhibiting matching numbered parts throughout. The finish is bright and evenly preserved, and the classic 1860 Army profile remains crisp and sharply defined.

Mechanically, both revolvers are excellent. The bores rate a perfect 10 out of 10, showing bright steel and sharp rifling with no visible wear. The actions function correctly with smooth hammer travel, proper cylinder indexing, and solid lockup. Timing and engagement are correct on both revolvers, reflecting the quality standards of Colt's second generation black powder commemorative production.

The U.S. Cavalry Commemorative cased sets were produced to honor the service history of the 1860 Army revolver as the primary sidearm of Union cavalry forces during the Civil War.
